A Santa Ana man was arrested Wednesday after he repeatedly muscled a motorcyclist off the freeway, then abruptly stopped in front of the motorcycle, causing it to crash, the California Highway Patrol said.

John Rice, 35, of Irvine was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where he was treated for possible broken ribs and cuts to both arms.

Stephen Stalf, 35, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run driving.

The incident occurred at 12:50 a.m. on the Santa Ana Freeway south of Culver Drive, a CHP dispatcher said.

Witnesses said the driver of a Nissan 280Z tried to run the motorcycle off the freeway several times, accelerating to 75 m.p.h, the CHP said. Then the driver of the car braked abruptly and the motorcycle crashed into the back of the Nissan, the dispatcher said.

Witnesses provided the description of the car and its driver, leading officers to his Santa Ana residence, CHP said.
