Police in Peru announced a manhunt for Leonel Figueroa and Hector Neyra, former banking officials accused of taking $3 million in bribes from the Bank of Credit & Commerce International. Figueroa is former president of the Central Bank and Neyra former general manager. Manhattan Dist. Atty. Robert M. Morgenthau said in New York on July 29 that he had evidence BCCI officials paid them bribes between 1986 and 1987 so that up to $270 million of Peru’s international reserves would be placed in a BCCI bank in Panama. All the money was later returned to Peru and drew interest.
