Bice to Leave Nevada Las Vegas to Play Basketball for USF

Basketball player Travis Bice, a 6-foot-5 guard-forward at Nevada Las Vegas and a 1987 graduate of Simi Valley High, is transferring to the University of San Francisco, USF Coach Jim Brovelli said Wednesday.

Bice was a reserve who specialized in three-point shots on Coach Jerry Tarkanian’s 1990 national championship team as a sophomore.

Cal State Northridge completed its first season at the NCAA Division I level in June, but the Matador women’s program still ranks No. 1 in Division II over the past 10 years, according to a study monitoring schools’ performances in postseason athletics from 1981-91.

Northridge totaled 3,918 points in the study, despite receiving zero points for the 1990-91 school year, during which it competed at the Division I level.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, which totaled 360 points during the 1990-91 school year, was second on the list with 2,802 points.

The annual Los Angeles City Women’s Senior golf championship, open to players over 50 years of age, will be held Sept. 4-5 at Woodley Lakes Golf Course in Van Nuys. The entry deadline is Monday.

Millie Stanley will be shooting for her ninth championship. Stanley, the defending champion, won six titles in a row from 1981 to 1986.

The Maccabee Athletic Club has begun registration for its annual basketball program. Tryouts are set for Sept. 8 and Sept. 15. The season starts Sept. 25 and will run through Dec. 15, and competition is open to second- and third-graders (Division I) and fourth- through sixth-graders (Division II).

Tryouts for the Mission College men’s soccer team will begin Monday at 7:15 a.m. at the Hansen Dam Sports Complex in Lake View Terrace. Valley and Pierce college students are eligible because those schools do not field teams.
