SAN CLEMENTE : Workshop to Detail Building Standards
In an effort to preserve and promote the city’s Spanish architectural character while keeping peace among city officials, the Community Development Commission is hosting a workshop to discuss design guidelines.
Members of the City Council, Planning and Community design commissions will meet Wednesday to discuss a report outlining design standards for new construction in residential, industrial and business districts, including the Del Mar downtown commercial area.
The report, released last month by urban design consultant Gerald Gast, suggests guidelines and architectural styles such as Spanish Colonial that are consistent with the city’s overall theme.
“Square boxes are not acceptable in San Clemente,” said Catherine O’Hara, senior planner with the community development department, which oversees the Community Design Commission. “That’s not the image that the city wants to project.”
The City Council commissioned the report about two years ago.
During Wednesday’s joint meeting, Gast will offer an overview of the guidelines and answer questions from officials and the public. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the Ole Hanson Room, 100 N. Seville.
