THOUSAND OAKS : Educators OK Funds for Anti-Drug Effort
Conejo Valley school board members voted Thursday to contribute $4,000 for a second DARE officer to teach schoolchildren about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
Half of the money for the program will be taken from the district’s drug, alcohol and tobacco education fund. The other $2,000 needed to pay the officer’s salary will come from a school district contingency account.
The first DARE officer was hired five years ago to serve Conejo Valley public school students, with expenses covered by the city of Thousand Oaks.
Last year, the Conejo Valley Unified School District contributed $30,000 for the second DARE officer to teach in Conejo schools and at five private schools and the Oak Park Unified School District.
In a preliminary budget for the 1991-92 school year, Conejo Valley school officials dropped the district’s $30,000 contribution to the program because of cutbacks in state funds for schools. Last month, the Thousand Oaks City Council agreed to consider reinstating the second DARE officer, saying they will look to the community for financial help.
