Firefighters Find Woman’s Body

A 22-year-old woman believed to be the housekeeper at a Laurel Canyon home was found dead in a fire-damaged garage Thursday, the victim of an apparent stabbing, police said.

Her identity was withheld pending notification of relatives.

“It appears the fire was possibly set to cover up the murder,” said Los Angeles Police Department Detective Mike McDonagh.

The blaze triggered an alarm system monitored by a private security agency that alerted authorities. Firefighters discovered the woman’s body as they hosed down the garage.

The murder address--a large, olive-drab, woodframe home in the 8900 block of Holly Drive--is about a half block from the Wonderland Avenue house where four people were found bludgeoned to death in 1981, neighbors said. The case involved the late porno film star John C. Holmes, who was acquitted of murder in 1982 and who died of complications from AIDS in 1988.
