WORLD IN BRIEF : CHINA : Deng’s 87th Birthday Gets Scant Attention

China’s senior leader Deng Xiaoping turned 87, but the event went virtually unnoticed. The official media did not report Deng’s birthday, although the official Guangming Daily carried an article recalling his role in bringing the Communists to power in 1948, and national television briefly reported on the publication of a series of studies on Deng’s political theories. Deng, still the most powerful man in China, although he retired from his last official post in March, 1990, was last seen in public during Chinese New Year in February.
