CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : WRIGHTWOOD : Forest Fire Nears Mountain Town
More than 1,300 firefighters battled flames that burned across 1,340 acres of the San Bernardino National Forest and were creeping toward this small mountain community, officials said. The fire was 60% contained by Thursday evening, and full containment was expected by Saturday. No evacuations had been ordered, but five strike teams with 25 fire engines were stationed in Wrightwood to protect the town, U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Melody Lardner said. The northern edge of the blaze was about one-quarter to one-half miles south of Wrightwood, she said, but added that the gap included steep terrain, including a ridgeline that served as a barrier. “No people or structures are in imminent danger and no plans for evacuation are being made,” Forest Service spokeswoman Judy Behrens said. The blaze broke out about 11 a.m. Wednesday in the region 40 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
