Conditions in L.A. Schools
“It’s getting to the point where you hope someone in your class is absent” (a teacher quoted in “L.A. School to Slash 800 Teacher Jobs,” front page, Aug. 14). What a sad, yet accurate, statement about the state of our public school system. It is disgracefully ironic that on the same day that figures are released stating that enrollment in California schools will reach its highest number ever (“State’s Public Schools to Reach Record 5 Million Enrollment,” Part A, Aug. 14), the LAUSD decides to eliminate another 800 teachers.
When will we realize that our children are our future? As a solution, I suggest that the government redirect a portion of our public universities’ budgets to our public schools. To compensate for this loss in revenue, raising the tuition would in all likelihood be unavoidable. However, I believe this would be justified since public university tuitions would still be lower than their private counterparts and our public schools would be helped immensely.
