Conditions in L.A. Schools
We can all feel justified in our anger about the impending disaster for Los Angeles education caused by the layoff of 800 teachers. On a personal level, my outrage grows even larger when I realize that my wife, a LAUSD teacher for 23 years, has had to provide her own supplies for the classroom. These include basic necessities such as paper, books, teaching aids, drawing materials, audio-visual equipment, etc. at a cost of $3,000-$4,000 per year!
Adding insult to injury is the fact that more than 80 administrators are provided personal automobiles. One would think that at a yearly salary of $80,000 to $150,000, administrators could easily afford their own automobiles. Using simple math, I calculate that these automobile expenditures add up to several million dollars that could have been utilized for teacher salaries or classroom supplies.
I hope the “fat cats” won’t sleep easily knowing that the ultimate loser will be the children of Los Angeles. Yes, we should all be outraged.
