Five full-time teaching positions in the Conejo Valley Unified School District will be restored under a plan approved by school board members.

The board voted 4 to 1 Thursday to use $185,000 in extra funds to restore five of the 22 positions that were cut during preliminary budget deliberations. Three of the teachers will be placed in elementary schools, and two in secondary schools, said Assistant Supt. Leean Nemeroff. The teachers will be hired on a semester-to-semester basis, depending on enrollment.

School officials project that the district will end the 1992-93 school year with an $850,000 surplus from state supplemental grants, said Assistant Supt. Sarah J. Hart. The teachers’ salaries and benefits, totaling about $185,000, will be taken from the extra funds.

Board member William H. Henry Jr. voted against the plan, saying it is “fiscally irresponsible” to restore teaching positions at this time.
