** Dan Reed Network, “The Heat,” Mercury. This network (which plays the Roxy on Monday and the Bacchanal in San Diego on Tuesday) keeps zapping between channels as it moves from Prince’s funk to Bryan Adams’ heartland rock to Bon Jovi metal lite, with even a pause for a Mungo Jerry-style skiffle tune. But Reed’s voice is ordinary, his lyrics skim the surface of romantic and world-in-peril subject matter, and the production is slick and overblown. Lots of craft, some good intentions, but little inspiration.
Albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor) to five (a classic).
