PADRES UPDATE : NOTEBOOK / BOB NIGHTENGALE : Andersen Gone; Padres Expected to Recall Costello or Lilliquist
The Padres will place reliever Larry Andersen on the disabled list today and are expected to recall either John Costello or Derek Lilliquist from triple-A Las Vegas.
Andersen, who has been bothered again by a ruptured disk and bulging disk in his neck, left the team Sunday afternoon and has an appointment scheduled Tuesday in the Bay Area with Dr. Arthur White at the Spine Care Center.
Andersen is expected to have surgery and will be lost for the season.
“This will be for the best,” Andersen said. “It’s just that my timing’s so bad.”
What, that there are only six weeks remaining in the season?
“No, that the wind’s blowing in at Wrigley,” he said.
The most amazing aspect of the Padres’ 12-run, 14-hit attack?
It came in a game Fred McGriff went zero for five with four strikeouts, and Tony Gwynn went one for five.
