Irene Fuentes; Elementary School Teacher

Irene Fuentes, who taught in San Fernando Valley elementary schools for nearly 30 years, has died at a Glendale hospital. She was 58.

A longtime Glendale resident, Miss Fuentes died Wednesday of cancer, said a sister, Marion Fuentes of Glendale.

Born Alice Irene Fuentes in Monterey Park, she grew up in the Valley and graduated from Verdugo High School in 1951. She received her teaching credential from Cal State Los Angeles and taught mainly kindergarten at several schools in the Valley, including Arminta Street in North Hollywood and Glenwood in Sun Valley. She left Glenwood in the mid-1980s and worked as a language lab technician at Glendale Community College for a year.

In addition to her sister Marion, Miss Fuentes is survived by her brothers, Bill Fuentes of Newbury Park and Frank Fuentes of Magalia, Calif.; another sister, Jewel Harness of Alpine, Calif.; two nephews and one niece.

Visitation is planned from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Kiefer & Eyerick Mortuary, 314 E. Harvard St., Glendale, which is handling the arrangements.

A funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary, with burial to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park in the Hollywood Hills.
