1 Killed, 2 Wounded in Drive-By Shooting
A 16-year-old Granada Hills boy was fatally shot and two companions were wounded by youths who mistook them for members of a rival gang, Los Angeles police said Monday.
Kenneth Caldera, described as an innocent victim who did not belong to a gang, was pronounced dead at Valley Presbyterian Hospital from a gunshot wound to his upper back, Lt. George Rock said. His friends, Johnny Nieto, 14, and Robin Rowan, 19, both from Granada Hills, were wounded in the left leg and right arm, respectively.
The three were shot as they rode in a car through Sepulveda on Friday night. The driver of the car, whom police did not identify, escaped injury and rushed his friends to the emergency entrance of the hospital, Rock said.
The shooting occurred after the group dropped off a friend at a party near Willis Avenue and Blythe Street and drove north toward Roscoe Boulevard, Rock said. A white car pulled up beside them; one of its two occupants brandished a handgun and then fired as the four friends tried to drive away.
No arrests had been made Monday, and the case remained under investigation.
