Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Lawyers’ Group Criticizes Thomas

The National Assn. of Criminal Defense Lawyers said it opposes the nomination of Judge Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. The Washington-based group said that Thomas, as a federal appellate judge, demonstrated “a cold indifference” to the legal problems of the poor and uneducated. The lawyers’ organization also said that Thomas, as a member of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, should have disqualified himself from considering an appeal in the case of former White House aide Oliver L. North because he had praised North in speeches.
