BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Yankees Finally Sign No. 1 Pick Taylor
The New York Yankees signed Brien Taylor, the nation’s No. 1 draft pick. Contract details were not announced.
Taylor, selected in June after his senior year in high school, was scheduled to begin classes at Louisburg, N.C., Junior College today. Had the 18-year-old pitcher started school, major league rules would have prohibited the Yankees from negotiating with him until after Louisburg’s baseball season ends in May.
Bo Jackson, trying to work his way back to the American League, singled twice in four at-bats night for the Birmingham Barons in a double-A Southern League game with Charlotte at Hoover, Ala.
Outfielder Hubie Brooks of the New York Mets may not play again this season because of a herniated disk in his upper back.
