Low-Flying Jets Rattle Residents

Four low-flying Air Force jet planes helped launch a football game Thursday night at Anaheim Stadium. They also startled some residents.

The jets were F4G Wild Weasels from the 35th Tactical Fighter Wing at George Air Force Base, near Victorville. They flew over the stadium about 6 p.m. Thursday, in connection with the playing of the national anthem and the opening of the Disneyland Pigskin Classic. The game featured Brigham Young University versus Florida State University.

One angry resident claimed that the jets “were only 200 feet” off the ground after they passed over the stadium. But Anaheim police said the jets actually were at 1,000 feet, the altitude they were assigned for the stadium flyover.

“The lady’s claim about the jets’ being only at 200 feet is just grossly exaggerated,” Officer Joe Karns said Thursday night. “Most people don’t know how to judge altitudes.”

Karns said Disneyland officials had briefed police before the game about the flyover.
