Fire The Groom Wins Beverly D. at Arlington
CHICAGO — Fire The Groom, ridden by Gary Stevens, won the $500,000 Beverly D. Stakes at Arlington International Racecourse on Saturday and the winning trainer was all-time riding champion Bill Shoemaker.
Fire the Groom covered the 1 3/16 miles on the turf in 1:53 2/5, coming within a fifth of a second of the track record. The horse was saddled by Paddy Gallagher, one of Shoemaker’s assistants.
Trailing in sixth and next to last for six furlongs, Fire The Groom uncorked a stretch drive on the outside to win by almost two lengths.
Colour Chart finished second with favored Miss Josh third. Fire The Groom, the second choice, paid $6.40 to win and earned $300,000 to boost her earnings to $690,718.
