Schimmel’s Bail Set Too High
After reading many articles and letters regarding the Eric Schimmel case, I believe one point has not been brought out. It was reported that his bail was set at $20,000. His family couldn’t post that amount, and that is why he was left in jail. However, a couple of days later, I read in The Times that a group of gang members were arrested in a stabbing. Their bail was set at $10,000.
The justice system does not react fairly or consistently to the crimes and situations. Certainly stabbing someone is worse than breaking into a vehicle. The district attorney’s office should shift its aggressiveness to the gang problem.
