La Verne : Elevated Freeway Opposed
The City Council on Tuesday objected to the proposed extension of California 30 through the city as an elevated roadway.
Commenting on an environmental impact report prepared by Caltrans, council members said an elevated freeway will block the mountain view of many residents and raise noise levels. They recommended that the freeway instead be built below ground level.
In a letter to the council, Caltrans maintained that a depressed freeway would cost more and involve technical impediments, including the building of drainage channels that could overflow, across the freeway.
However, council members were not convinced, saying they could see no unsolvable technical problems to building the freeway below ground level.
