Usually, doing good means you have to suffer a little. Give a homeless person your not-so-spare change. Let your lawn go brown during the drought. Smile sweetly when your mother-in-law complains.
But sometimes it’s different.
Sunday, you can contribute to two worthy causes--the Glendale Teen Support Center and the Glendale Kiwanis Club scholarship program--and have nothing but fun.
It’s the Kiwanis’ annual Community Spirit Day, and this year’s theme is “In the Good Old Summertime.”
That means a gourmet picnic-basket lunch from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Brand Park, with a silent auction, tours of Doctors’ House, barbershop quartets, antique cars and more; presentation of the Community Spirit Award to Don Platz at 2:30 p.m. and a concert by Norman Mamey and his jazz trio at 2:45 p.m., with separate entertainment for children.
Of course, you can scowl if you want to.
But it’s hard not to feel good when you think of what the Teen Center is doing to strengthen high school-age kids against drugs, gangs, suicide, ethnic conflicts and negative peer pressure.
Admission is $40 for adults, $10 for children. Bring your own blanket and park in the Brand Park lot at 1601 W. Mountain St.
