Southern California Rapid Transit District drivers voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to ratify a new three-year contract, which calls for a pay increase of 40 cents an hour each year.

Earl Clark, general chairman of the United Transportation Union, said in Los Angeles that the drivers voted 2,605 to 308 to approve a tentative agreement reached in deadline bargaining on Monday. The pact still must be approved by the RTD board.

RTD negotiators have also reached tentative agreements with two other unions representing its employees: the Amalgamated Transit Union, made up of about 2,000 mechanics and maintenance workers, and the Transportation and Communication Union, made up of about 650 clerical workers.
