TUSTIN : 1st Street Tire Store Gets a Green Light
The City Council voted Monday night to grant a conditional use permit allowing a new tire store on 1st Street.
The permit will be reviewed one year after the store opens to determine whether it meets the city’s expectations on noise, traffic and parking.
Proponents of the Goodyear store have gone through a long process trying to win approval, with hearings before both the Planning Commission and the City Council. The process was complicated because a tire store is not an allowable use under the city’s 1st Street Specific Plan.
Councilwoman Leslie Anne Pontious voted against the permit for that reason. The council vote was 4-1.
After winning approval, the Goodyear applicants asked the city to waive about $2,000 in permit and processing fees, but the council refused.
Councilman Richard B. Edgar said the application required many staff hours because the council asks its staff to be thorough and consistent.
“I feel we have a better-quality project because of the time that was involved,” Mayor Charles E. Puckett said.
Councilman Earl J. Prescott dissented on the waiver rejection, saying he thinks the Redevelopment Agency should pay the fees.
