Wapnick Traded to White Sox
Pitcher Steve Wapnick, a Monroe High and Moorpark College product, was traded to the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday to complete a deal in which outfielder Cory Snyder was sent to Toronto.
Wapnick, who had been pitching at Toronto’s triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, N.Y., was the player to be named in the deal for Snyder, an outfielder who formerly played at Canyon High.
The right-handed pitcher was 6-3 with a 2.76 earned-run average and 20 saves for Syracuse. He led the International League in saves and tied for the overall lead in triple-A in that category.
Wapnick, who will turn 26 in three weeks, joins a White Sox pitching staff that includes former Valley-area standouts Jack McDowell (Notre Dame High), Scott Radinsky (Simi Valley) and Wayne Edwards (Village Christian).
Cal State Northridge football players Akil Mahasin, Robert Vado and Reggie Hunt have been ruled ineligible.
Mahasin, a walk-on freshman tailback from Daly City, Calif., did not meet NCAA Proposition 48 requirements. Mahasin scored more than the required 700 points on his SAT test but did not have enough credits in high school core subjects.
Safety Robert Vado, a sophomore from Franklin High, and linebacker Reggie Hunt, a freshman walk-on from Muir High, are academically ineligible.
