BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Ryan Will Not Pitch in Anaheim
Nolan Ryan will not face the Angels during the Texas Rangers’ three-game series at Anaheim Stadium next week and probably won’t make the trip.
Ryan, 44, started Friday night against the Chicago White Sox at Arlington Stadium. In the Rangers’ six-man rotation, his next start is scheduled for Thursday at Texas. Ryan also missed the Rangers’ four-game series at Anaheim June 28-July 1.
His only appearance against the Angels this season was July 7, when he pitched seven hitless innings and finished with a two-hitter in a 7-0 victory.
Left-hander Kyle Abbott, rated the Angels’ top pitching prospect, will get a start soon. . . . First baseman-outfielder Lee Stevens, another of the seven September call-ups, batted sixth and played right field Friday. Stevens, aware that Wally Joyner can become a free agent after the season, regards the next few weeks as crucial to his future. “It’s very important for me to come in and do well,” he said.
