After more than a quarter of a century, Ventura is about to get another Lions Club, but members will have to pay more to join.

The Ventura Beach Lions Club met for the first time last week at the Doubletree Hotel in Ventura. The group will meet at 12:15 p.m. the first and third Wednesdays of every month at the hotel, said secretary Tom Spears.

Although there are five Lions clubs already in Ventura, Spears said 25 men and women have already paid the $100 membership fee to join the new club. He hopes to have 50 members--the maximum number to be allowed--by the time the group is chartered in November.

Besides the membership fee, members will pay $50 a month in dues, which includes the price of lunch. The fees are about twice what other Lions clubs charge, Spears said.

“We’re charging a premium price to be in a premium program,” Spears said. Charter club members often pay more, he said, and the higher fees also help to ensure participation in the group.

Like all Lions clubs, the new group will provide glasses and hearing aids, and will raise funds for diabetes research and a school drug awareness program called Lions Quest. “We’ll also try to do a lot of work for the Boys and Girls clubs in Ventura,” he said.
