New Partners Win Doubles
NEW YORK — Pam Shriver and Natalia Zvereva of the Soviet Union celebrated their new partnership with a U.S. Open women’s doubles title Sunday. They defeated Jana Novotna of Czechoslovakia and Larisa Savchenko of the Soviet Union, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).
Zvereva and Savchenko were partners, but they split although they won Wimbledon. Shriver said she got some encouragement from her former partner, Martina Navratilova.
“Martina said to me, ‘It is about time you won one without me,’ ” Shriver said. “That was so nice. Then she came in (Saturday) and told me she was really cheering for me to to win. That was very special.”
