OUTLOOK
After qualifying for the playoffs in three of his first five years as coach, Brinkley would like his team to take the next step: win a league championship and advance beyond the quarterfinals of the playoffs. This could be the season. The Sailors, who advanced to the Division VI quarterfinals before losing to champion Sunny Hills, return one of the more experienced teams in the league. Mangnall, a first-team, all-division selection at linebacker, and Coluccio, who was second in the county in interceptions last season with six, return to lead the defense. The offensive and defensive lines--usually a Newport Harbor strong point--are especially deep, and Brinkley says they will be among the best he’s had at Newport. Ofer, a linebacker last year who played quarterback on lower-level teams, brings more speed to quarterback.
