COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Story Made Interesting Reading, but . . .

After Saturday night’s 27-23 loss to UCLA, some Brigham Young players were irritated by remarks in an article attributed to the Bruins’ Tommy Maddox and Matt Darby that demeaned their team. The players had mimeographed copies of a story written by James Sikes of the Bay City Post-News.

There is a Bay City in Michigan, Oregon, Texas and Wisconsin, but none have newspapers listed as the Post-News. UCLA Coach Terry Donahue said the sports editor of the Bay City Tribune in Texas told him he had never heard of the Post-News or Sikes.

“It was a bogus story,” said Donahue.

Many observers were puzzled when the Bruins tried for a first down with a running play on fourth down and two from the BYU 14-yard line midway through the fourth quarter while leading, 27-23. Fullback Kaleaph Carter was thrown for a one-yard loss on a routine dive into the line.

“We had a miscommunication as to how far (the required yardage) was,” Donahue said. “We called a play that was not geared for the distance. When I realized a mistake was made, I couldn’t get timeout called. We just flat made a mistake.”
