THOUSAND OAKS : Housing Charity to Get Office at CLU
More than 100 volunteers plan to build a Habitat for Humanity volunteer center on the California Lutheran University campus on Sept. 28.
The project will serve as a one-day construction school for the volunteers and create an office for future Habitat for Humanity projects, said Dr. Mark Mathews, chairman of the CLU chapter of the nonprofit organization that provides housing for low-income families in the United States and 33 other countries.
The volunteers, including university students, faculty and members of nine local church congregations, will begin building CLU’s Habitat House at 7:45 a.m.
Five or six contractors have volunteered labor, and all the materials were donated by Samuelson Brothers, a Los Angeles contractor, Mathews said. Thousand Oaks Mayor Fred Schillo will visit the site at 10 a.m., he said.
“Lots of good people are saying they want to be part of the solution,” he said.
The CLU chapter, which was established in January, recently participated in the construction of 100 houses in Tijuana, Mexico, and has volunteered to help finance the construction of five houses in Guatemala in 1992, he said.
