Police to Hold Seminar on Crime Prevention
The Los Angeles Police Department will hold a crime-prevention seminar in Van Nuys today in an effort to cap a spiraling robbery rate in the San Fernando Valley.
The hourlong seminar, open to both residents and business people, will focus on how to avoid becoming a robbery victim or being injured if accosted, said Sgt. Dennis Zine, a department spokesman. Police also will offer tips on what crime victims should watch for during a robbery to help authorities catch a robber later.
The seminar was developed in the wake of a double slaying in June at a Northridge sandwich shop and in response to an escalating robbery rate, Zine said. By the end of August, robberies were up by 33% over the same period last year, rising from about 3,000 to slightly more than 4,000, he said.
The seminar is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. at the Church on the Way, 14300 Sherman Way.
