Nation IN BRIEF : SOUTH DAKOTA : Student Holds Class at Gunpoint 4 Hours
A ninth-grader at Rapid City Stevens High School brought a sawed-off shotgun to math class and held 22 classmates hostage for about four hours before another student disarmed him, police said. No one was injured. The boy, whose name was withheld because of his age, gave up and was taken into custody after a hostage took the shotgun from a table where he had placed it while lighting a cigarette, Rapid City, S.D., Police Chief Tom Hennies said. The armed student first ordered the teacher out of the room, Hennies said, and later demanded that food and cigarettes be delivered . Police said he fired the gun about 10 times.
