Nation IN BRIEF : MISSOURI : Fire Kills 4 Inmates Trapped in Jail Cells

A fire in an auxiliary generator poured thick smoke into the Taney County Jail in Forsyth, Mo., before dawn, killing four of the 26 prisoners who were trapped in their cells behind electronically controlled doors. Firefighters wearing air masks used a special tool to open each cell. All the surviving prisoners were treated for smoke inhalation, and 13 were hospitalized. Eleven firefighters and a jail dispatcher were treated for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire was being investigated.
