Hearing on Homeless Shelter Is Delayed

A hearing on controversial plans to build the city’s first temporary housing for homeless families was postponed Tuesday night because of the absence of a councilman, whose father died.

More than 100 supporters and opponents of Mary’s Home for Transitional Families learned the hearing had been postponed until Oct. 1 when they showed up at the City Council chambers.

In addition to the absence of Councilman William D. Mahoney, Councilman Juan M. Garcia has to abstain from voting on the issue because of decisions he made as a planning commissioner. Without Mahoney and Garcia, the three remaining council members would have had to shoulder the controversy.

The facility would provide housing for 28 families in a seven-unit gated complex built at the south end of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and School.
