SPORTSCOPE : No. 1 Bruins Play 3 Games on Road

The top-ranked UCLA men’s soccer team will play this weekend in the Goal Rush tournament at Fresno State.

The Bruins (4-1) will play No. 19 Creighton at 6 p.m. Friday and Fresno State at 2 p.m. Sunday. UCLA will play Wednesday night at Nevada Las Vegas.

The Bruins played two overtime matches in a tournament in Seattle last weekend and went 1-1. UCLA beat No. 6 Portland, 3-1, then lost in the final to Washington, 2-1. UCLA goalkeeper Brad Friedel was named to the all-tournament team.

The No. 3 UCLA women’s volleyball team will try to extend its 57-match Pacific 10 Conference winning streak when it begins conference play Friday night at No. 18 Oregon (10-2) and Saturday afternoon at Oregon State (7-5).

Last week the Bruins (5-1) won a tournament in Nebraska, defeating Kansas State in four games, Wyoming in three and Nebraska in four. Against Nebraska, UCLA played before 11,032, an NCAA attendance record for women’s volleyball.

UCLA outside hitter Natalie Williams was named to the all-tournament team and teammate Irene Renteria, a middle blocker, was named the Pac-10 co-player of the week with Washington’s Diane Flick.

The No. 11 Pepperdine women’s volleyball team will play at No. 20 San Diego State at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

At last week’s Eddie Bauer First Serve Invitational in Seattle, the Waves (6-4) beat Iowa, then lost five-game matches to Colorado and Washington. Pepperdine outside hitter Cari Delson, who had been sidelined 10 days with a back injury, returned to action against Washington, but Wave outside hitter Blair Noonan strained ligaments in her left knee against Colorado. Noonan did not play against Iowa or Washington but was expected to practice this week.

The Pepperdine water polo team, ranked No. 3 in the West by the American Water Polo Coaches Assn., will play at No. 12 UC San Diego at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Waves (4-2) finished sixth at last week’s tournament at UC Irvine, beating Fresno State, UC Santa Barbara and USC but losing to California and Irvine.

The UCLA water polo team, ranked No. 4 in the West, will play Air Force at 10 a.m. Sunday at Cal State Long Beach.

The Bruins (5-2) finished second at the UC Irvine tournament, losing the final to Cal, 8-5. In other tournament matches, UCLA beat Loyola Marymount, Irvine, Cal State Long Beach and Stanford.

The UCLA women’s cross-country team, idle last week, will compete Saturday afternoon in the Aztec Invitational at San Diego State.

The Bruin men lost last week to Tennessee at Knoxville. UCLA’s top finisher was Eliazar Herrera, who finished the four-mile course in 21 minutes 54 seconds.

The Pepperdine men’s and women’s cross-country teams will play host to Loyola Marymount on Saturday. The women’s 5-K race will start at 9:30 a.m. and the men’s 4.5-mile race at 10:15.

At last week’s invitational at Whittier, the Wave women finished seventh among 14 teams and the Pepperdine men were 15th in a field of 19. In the women’s five-kilometer run, Pepperdine’s Jen Fritz finished 11th in 20:34.
