Sheri Smith, UCSD Media Official, Dies
Sheri Lee Smith, a public information representative for UC San Diego Medical Center and former newspaper reporter, died Thursday of cancer. She was 34.
Smith had worked for UCSD since 1983, specializing in media relations and employee publications. Before joining the medical center’s public affairs office, she was an account executive at the Swil Agency in San Diego, and a reporter and editor for the Sentinel in San Diego and Life News in La Mesa.
She is survived by her father, John Smith, and her stepmother, Marie Smith, of Cerritos; a brother, Brad Smith of Norwalk; a step sister and three stepbrothers.
Smith was cremated, and her ashes will be inurned at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cypress. Memorial services will be held next week in Los Angeles and at 5 p.m. Oct. 3 at Presidio Park in San Diego.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the UCSD Cancer Center Foundation.
