Free Eye Exams, Glasses for the Uninsured
Free eye exams and prescription glasses will be offered to uninsured workers and their families in November through the California Vision Project, it was announced this week.
The project is being sponsored by the California Optometric Assn. because nearly 3 million working Californians and their families have no health care insurance and cannot afford vision care.
Now in its third year, the project provided free exams to 7,000 people throughout the state and eyeglasses to 5,000 people last year, according to the California Optometric Assn. The association plans to serve an equal number this year.
To qualify for the program, applicants must be employed, meet specified income guidelines and have no health insurance, Assemblyman Mike Gotch (D-San Diego) said.
The eye exams will be given Nov. 4-8, but appointment applications must be received by Sept. 30.
Applications are available at Assemblyman Gotch’s office, 1080 University Ave., Suite H-201 or by calling 294-7878. Applications also are available at the San Diego County Optometric Society, the Salvation Army, Catholic Charities and Lions Club.
