Inter-Track Wagering Starts at Hollypark
Hollywood Park, with the signing of Senate Bill 944 by Gov. Pete Wilson, will begin inter-track wagering from Fairplex Park and Los Alamitos on Saturday.
The Fairplex season continues every day through Sept. 30. First post time for the 12-to-13 race programs is 1 p.m.
The Los Alamitos quarter horse meeting--with racing Wednesday through Sunday--continues through Feb. 8. First post is 7:25 p.m., except for Sunday, when post is at 6 p.m. The Sunday post will be moved to 5 p.m. beginning Oct. 27.
Hollywood Park fans will be able to view the races at the park’s air-conditioned pavilion. The ground-level study hall, levels one and two for general admission and levels three and four for turf club and clubhouse will be open.
Gate three (Prairie Avenue and Hardy Street) and four (Century Boulevard) will be used for Fairplex racing. Only gate four will be used for Los Alamitos racing.
Hollywood Park also will be an inter-track wagering site for the coming Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita, which runs Oct. 2 through Nov. 11.
Live racing returns to Hollywood Park on Nov. 13 and continues through Dec. 24.
The San Francisco Giants purchased the contract of former St. Bernard High standout Royce Clayton from Shreveport of the Texas League on Thursday.
Clayton, a shortstop, is expected to make his major league debut when the Giants begin a three-game series today against the Padres in San Diego.
Clayton, the Giants’ first-round pick in the 1988 June Amateur draft, had a .280 batting average with five home runs, 68 runs batted in and 36 stolen bases. He was selected the top shortstop in the double-A Texas League.
After winning its home opener against San Diego State on Tuesday, the Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team will compete in the Buckeye Classic today and Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.
The Lions (7-4) will play North Carolina (4-4) and 14th-ranked Ohio State (5-3) meets Syracuse (9-0) today. The winners will battle for the tournament championship Saturday and the losers play for the consolation title.
Loyola has won six of its 10 road matches, including two last week in winning the fifth annual Anteater Invitational at UC Irvine.
With their appearance in the Buckeye Classic, the Lions will have played 12 of their first 13 matches on the road. The Lions open a five-match home stand at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Cal State Northridge.
The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s soccer team will be trying to stay undefeated when it visits NCAA Division I opponent San Diego State at 1 p.m. Saturday in San Diego.
The Toros, ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division II, improved their record to 4-0 with a 2-1 victory over Cal Lutheran on Tuesday in Thousand Oaks.
Dominguez Hills has been led by junior forward Amy Rubin and freshman forward Staci Blough. Rubin is the team’s scoring leader with three goals and two assists and Blough has three goals.
The Loyola Marymount men’s soccer team will compete in the Brigham Young Invitational today and Saturday in Provo, Utah.
Loyola will meet Brigham Young (4-2) today and Southwest Missouri State (1-2) on Saturday in the round-robin tournament.
Sunday’s 4-1 loss to fourth-ranked Santa Clara was Loyola’s only loss in its past four games.
The team has been led by junior Jeff Van Gastel, who has a goal and three assists, and goalkeeper Mike Luken, who has an 0.42 goals-against average.
Many of the top NCAA Division II women’s volleyball teams in the Western United States will compete in the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toro Invitational Tournament today and Saturday.
Among the teams competing in the tournament are 13th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona, No. 14 Chapman and No. 15 Metro State of Colorado.
Dominguez Hills (7-6) will be matched in pool play against Sonoma State at 3 p.m. today and Cal State Stanislaus at 7 p.m. Consolation and championship matches start at 10 a.m. Saturday.
In matches last week, Dominguez Hills was defeated by Cal Baptist in five games and defeated The Master’s College in five games.
