THE VIDEO: ‘Gett Off’

THE SET-UP: Prince (pictured) and The New Power Generation’s five-song maxi video. The single, “Gett Off,” is a Fellini-esque orgy scene. Prince plays king-stud-and-tormentor.

THE LOOK: Not easily classifiable, especially when you consider that His Highness is said to be inspired presently by gangster movies and “Barbarella.” An outside viewer might add equal measures of Debbie Reynolds and Spanish matadors. Matadors comes to play with all those tight little high-waisted pants. In “Violet the Organ Grinder,” Prince dons magenta matador pants and a matching bolero jacket.

As for the Debbie Reynolds influence, it’s all those turbans, including some fashioned in prints to match his silk shirts. Prince’s most androgynous look is cream silk pajamas that conceal a black lace camisole (OK, so it’s officially a “vest”).

There are times when you have to check your calendar to remember in what year this video was made: New Power Generation singer Rosie Gaines looks swell, even though she’s swathed in layers of chiffon scarfs and, in some scenes, marabou; the female characters, Diamond and Pearl, wear ‘60s baby-doll dresses; while the New Power band members strut in futuristic-funk jackets of fuchsia, teal and gold with Ultrasuede geometric appliques.

THE SOURCES: Prince’s corporate fashion designer, Stacia Lang, based in Chanhassen, Minn., designed the principal costumes. For the most part, extras were dressed in clothes purchased in local contemporary and vintage clothing stores.

THE PAYOFF: Sexually provocative, though hardly shocking, styles that indulge Prince’s admirable sense of fantasy.
