WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
San Diego State defeated Northwestern in the first round of the Sheraton Invitational Tournament at Evanston, Ill. The Aztecs (6-5) won, 15-3, 15-12, 15-3, dropping Northwestern to 2-7. Gracie Schutt led SDSU--which today faces either seventh-ranked LSU or Northern Iowa--with 21 kills and five service aces.
“She had a great match, and everyone followed her lead,” Aztecs Coach Rudy Suwara said. “This team is really starting to jell.”
Visiting Cal Poly San Luis Obispo scored a 12-15, 16-14, 15-5, 15-12, 15-12 nonconference victory over University of San Diego despite 22 kills by Andrea Bruns. USD also got 16 kills apiece from Jennifer Lofftus and Nikki Wallace. USD is 18-6, SLO is 19-5.
Point Loma Nazarene defeated Cal Baptist, 15-5, 15-10, 9-15, 15-11, in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener behind the play of Robin Rabello, who had 17 kills, and Michelle Christiansen, who had 14.
PLNC is 7-5, 1-0; Cal Baptist is 5-4, 0-1.
MEN’S SOCCER
Jamal Holmes scored in the 112th minute to give Cal State San Bernardino a 1-0 overtime victory over UC San Diego in a nonconference match. Fernando Martinez assisted on the game-winner. UCSD is 3-3, Cal State San Bernardino is 4-1-1.
University of North Carolina Charlotte (5-0-1) scored a goal in each half to post a 2-0 victory over University of San Diego (2-3) at the USD Met Life Classic in front of 1,500. Gabe Garcia and Shawn Kowalewski scored.
In the first game of the tournament, California (3-1-2) scored a 2-1 victory over Cleveland State (2-3). Charlotte plays Cal at noon Sunday and USD plays Cleveland State at 2 p.m.
WATER POLO
Greg Goodrich scored four goals to lead UCSD to a 15-3 nonconference victory over Loyola Marymount. Jason Brown and freshman Mike Nalu, out of Valhalla, scored three goals apiece for the Tritons. UCSD is 6-4, LMU is 3-3.
