Bush’s Action on Israel Loan
Does Rep. Mel Levine (Commentary, Sept. 15) truly believe that an immediate $10-billion loan guarantee to Israel will enhance the prospects for peace in the Middle East? Will the U.S. become a more reliable and impartial arbiter, as he implies, if we succumb to Israel’s “poor-me syndrome” and catalyze new settlements in the occupied lands prior to the beginning of peace negotiations?
Forty billion dollars in U.S. aid to Israel in the past decade and the eight-month “window of opportunity” haven’t edged the Israeli government anywhere close to talking on fair and equal terms with the Palestinians and Arabs.
