Bush’s Action on Israel Loan

Last spring I spent two months in Jerusalem, during which time several Israeli and Palestinian civilians were killed. Many “third-party observers”--Americans, Europeans and Latin Americans who work there--discussed at length with me the moral dimensions of the conflict. While they upheld the just rights of the Israelis they all expressed strong convictions that the Palestinians are the victims of gross injustices.

They cited many examples of widespread confiscation of property, denial of basic political rights, humiliation, obstruction of economic and educational opportunities, imprisonment without trial, and in some cases bulldozing of homes, torture and deportation. Israelis also openly discussed many of these practices while I was there.

Like many Americans who visit the Holy Land I believe the United States is implicated in these injustices through its financial and diplomatic support of those who have committed them. I believe we should withhold any aid that will result in injustices to anyone, including Palestinians.
