VENTURA : Slow-Growth Group to Back Candidates
A coalition of slow-growth advocates has formed a political action committee to endorse candidates in the November election for three seats on the Ventura City Council.
Jerry Sortomme, leader of the group calling itself the Poinsettia Umbrella League (PUL), said the coalition was formed “because of the chaos” that arose from the disintegration of the Alliance for Ventura’s Future earlier this year.
Sortomme was one of several AVF officials who defected from the strong, slow-growth political action committee after spats with its leader, write-in City Council candidate Steve Bennett. The defectors formed another political action committee called Council for a Quality Ventura.
The PUL contains members of the Council for a Quality Ventura, the Green Party, the Environmental Coalition of Ventura County and the Ventura Avenue community, Sortomme said.
The PUL plans to hold a question-and-answer forum for the council candidates on Oct. 3 and to endorse candidates shortly thereafter, Sortomme said.
