SAN CLEMENTE : Nuclear Power Plant Sirens to Be Tested
Fifty-two community alert sirens, all part of the nuclear emergency system for the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, will sound off throughout South County today during a test from 10 a.m. to noon.
The sirens will be tested twice, for two to five minutes each, at locations in San Onofre State Park, Camp Pendleton, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point. Federal regulations require annual testing of the sirens.
In the case of an emergency, the sirens are meant to advise residents to turn on their radios or televisions for emergency instructions, said a spokesman for Southern California Edison Co., which oversees the San Onofre station.
