Literacy Council Graduates 24 Tutors

The South Coast Literacy Council graduated 24 new volunteer tutors in its English to Speakers of Other Languages program at Columbia Savings in El Toro.

The new tutors are Doris Berr, Joani Shepherd, Ilene Slapin, Vanessa R. William, all of Dana Point; Sandra McRitchie of El Toro; Janine Lehrer, John Morgan, Janice Witt, Elaine Kwan from Irvine; Dorothy Morrow, Ann Parekh, Veena Parekh, Lela H. Robbins of Laguna Hills; and Belinda Kein and Doris L. Wilson of Laguna Niguel.

Tutor trainers supervised by Onalee Carter of Laguna Beach included Mary Fitzgerald of El Toro and Jan Day of Laguna Beach.

The graduates completed an 18-hour course and will be teaching immigrants to improve their English speaking, reading and writing skills in centers in South Orange County.

Newport Beach resident Marian Perrin, charter member of the Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor Lion/Lioness Club, was honored by the Southern California Lions Eye Institute for her work on sight conservation.

She and six others were honored at a black-tie banquet and received their awards from Donald E. Banker, president of the International Assn. of Lions Clubs.

Jessika Alaniz, an eighth-grader at St. Boniface Catholic School in Anaheim, has been named a student counselor by the Assn. of Catholic Student Councils after her participation in a leadership camp.

Jessika, an Anaheim resident, will lead workshops during the school year for other student councils.

She will also serve as a staff assistant and lead workshops for the 1992 leadership camp.

Villa Park High School junior Ryan W. Evans, 17, will be presented his Boy Scout Eagle rank at a court of honor to be held Sunday at his family home in Villa Park.

Ryan, a water polo player who served as a lifeguard at a summer Boy Scout Camp, built a walkway from a parking lot to a trail in Santiago Oaks Regional Park in Orange as his community service project.

It not only provides access, but helps prevent erosion of the embankment leading to the park, according to Carl Gorsuch, his Scoutmaster.

Terry Lunine, a San Diego resident and director of personnel for the city of El Cajon, has been named assistant superintendent/human resources for the Capistrano Unified School District. Lunine, who holds a law degree and a master’s degree in psychology, was selected from 326 applicants. She will assume her position in mid-October.

Stephanie Vineyard of El Toro, a Western State University College of Law student, has been named the recipient of the $500 Pat Nixon Scholarship by the Orange County Federation of Republican Women. She is a third-year law student.

Lora Purvine of Garden Grove, a longtime member of Charles F. Knause Memorial Auxiliary 9867 in Cypress, was honored recently by the auxiliary with a certificate and citation for service to the group, which included several years of work as program chairperson.

Purvine will celebrate her 94th birthday on Nov. 13 and at the same time will donate 86 lap robe afghans she made for patients at the Long Beach Veteran’s Hospital.
