TENNIS ROUNDUP : McEnroe Defeats Connors, Reaches Swiss Indoor Final
Defending champion John McEnroe beat Jimmy Connors, 6-1, 6-3, Saturday and advanced to the final of the $750,000 Swiss Indoor at Basel, Switzerland.
In the other semifinal, Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland beat Alexander Volkov of the Soviet Union, 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5).
Third-seeded Aaron Krickstein moved into the final of the Queensland Open with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over second-seeded Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union at Brisbane, Australia.
Gianluca Pozzi of Italy advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jason Stoltenberg of Australia.
Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere of Bulgaria beat Rachel McQuillan of Australia, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, and Leila Meskhi of the Soviet Union defeated Nathalie Tauziat of France in semifinal matches in the Bayonne Open at Bayonne, France.
Top-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain defeated Marian Vajda of Czechoslovakia, 6-1, 6-2, in the semifinals of an ATP tournament at Palermo, Sicily. Frederic Fontang of France advanced with a victory over Jorde Arrese of Spain, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5).
Larisa Savchenko of the Soviet Union defeated Jo Durie of Britain, 6-4, 6-3, and Barbara Ritner of Germany overcame Katja Oljeklaus, also of Germany, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the semifinals of the St. Petersburg Cup in the Soviet Union.
Mary Joe Fernandez reached the final of an exhibition at Essen, Germany, when Martina Navratilova withdrew with a pulled thigh muscle while leading, 6-3, 1-2.
In the other semifinal, Monica Seles routed Jana Novotna of Czechoslovakia, 6-0 6-3.
