Longshot Wins Feature Race at Calder
MIAMI — Longshot Patty’s Princess led all the way, outrunning heavily favored Turnback The Alarm by one length in the $68,900 Gardenia Breeders’ Cup Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Calder Race Course on Saturday.
Patty’s Princess, ridden by Jose Velez Jr., was timed in 1:47 2/5 over a mile and 70 yards. The Florida-bred filly paid $18.60, $7 and $4.20. Turnback The Alarm, the 7-5 choice, paid $4.40 and $3.40. Appeal To Glory paid $5.40.
Breaking from the outside, Patty’s Princess rushed to the lead and was a neck in front of Miss Valid Pache into the first turn. She led by a length at the five-eighths pole with Turnback The Alarm three lengths back in third.
Patty’s Princess led Miss Valid Pache by three-quarters of a length on the far turn as Turnback The Alarm moved up on the outside to within a neck of second.
Turning for home, Patty’s Princess was on the inside and a length in front with Turnback The Alarm, now second, and Appeal To Glory rallying on the outside.
Through the drive Patty’s Princess repelled the challenges. She led by 1 1/2 lengths at the eighth pole and maintained a safe margin to the wire.
Patty’s Princess, a daughter of Marfa, had won two of four previous starts and earned $45,420 with the victory.
