PADRES UPDATE : NOTEBOOK : Benes Aiming for Padre Record

Right-hander Andy Benes can tie a franchise record for consecutive victories if he beats the Dodgers today. Benes has won 10 decisions in a row. Andy Hawkins and LaMarr Hoyt each won 11 consecutive decisions in 1985. Hawkins’ streak came at the beginning of the season.

On this day three years ago, Orel Hershiser of the Dodgers broke Don Drysdale’s record of 58 consecutive scoreless innings by blanking the Padres for 10 innings. The Padres eventually won in the 16th 2-1. Hershiser, who extended his streak to 59 innings, had five consecutive shutout victories during September. . . . Padre shortstop Tony Fernandez was sidelined Sunday by a sore back. He hurt it sliding Saturday night. Manager Greg Riddoch said Fernandez should be able to play this week. . . . Craig Shipley’s error was the 110th by the Padres this season. Their club record for fewest errors is 120 (1988).
