Arson Blamed in Factory Fire
Investigators said arson was to blame for a fire that caused $600,000 damage to a downtown Mexican candy and tortilla chip factory.
The fire destroyed most of the Mexican Candy Co. at 1340 G St. at 1:17 a.m. Sunday, a Fire Department spokesman said.
One firefighter was treated and released from UC San Diego Medical Center for heat exhaustion. There were no other injuries.
It took firefighters about 45 minutes to contain the fire in the one-story, 8,000-square-foot structure. Because of intense heat inside the building, firefighters were forced to knock out exterior walls and punch holes in the roof until it began to collapse.
Adjoining offices separated from the plant by a walkway suffered smoke damage, Metro Arson Strike Team Capt. Larry Carlson said.
Carlson would not reveal how the fire was started and said there are no suspects.
